The Making of a Midwife: A Journey Witnessed

Seen, Heard, and Learning—A Student Midwife’s Journey Unfolding.

Becoming a midwife is so much more than just a career path—it’s a calling. It’s a journey that touches the very core of who I am, connecting me to the women I will one day serve, and to something deeper than just the work itself. As I walk through my midwifery program, I find that this journal isn’t just a place for me to record facts or assignments. It’s a space where I can truly reflect on the emotions, challenges, and growth I experience along the way.

This process of journaling has become my way of being seen and heard, just as I hope to do for the women I’ll one day assist in their most sacred moments. Midwifery isn’t just about learning the right techniques or knowing the textbooks inside and out—it’s about listening deeply, holding space for others, and honoring the powerful process of birth. This journey is teaching me to be present with all the rawness and beauty that life brings, both in the birth room and within myself.

Some days, it feels like everything falls into place, and I am filled with clarity and purpose. Other days, I feel overwhelmed, questioning whether I am ready or even if I am on the right path. It’s during these times of uncertainty that I remind myself that growth doesn’t happen in a straight line. It’s the messy, beautiful process of learning, making mistakes, and figuring things out one step at a time. Every challenge is an opportunity to strengthen my resolve and deepen my compassion.

The most profound part of this journey has been learning what it truly means to be witnessed. Just as I will one day stand alongside women in labor, offering them my support and love during their most vulnerable moments, I am learning to do the same for myself. Reflecting on my own growth—the successes and the struggles—helps me embrace the vulnerability that comes with this path, while also honoring the sacredness of the work I’m called to do.

Each day, I take another step closer to becoming the midwife I’m meant to be. It’s not just about learning skills; it’s about aligning my heart with this calling. As I walk this path, I am learning to trust myself more deeply, to lean into the discomfort, and to find strength in my own vulnerability. This journey is so much more than I ever imagined—and I’m ready for what comes next, knowing that with every experience, I’m becoming more prepared to serve the women who will one day place their trust in me.
